As you explore the region, you’ll find that the Gulf Coast is a haven for unique and incredible wildlife. The warm Gulf waters and protected mangroves create the ideal habitat for diverse marine life and exotic birds.
Southwest Florida is home to a variety of turtles and tortoises, especially the Loggerhead sea turtle, which returns to our beaches each year between May and October to nest under the moonlight. Visitors and locals alike are encouraged to minimize light pollution on the beach as much as possible during this time, clear the beach at nighttime, and steer clear of nests and hatchlings.
Southwest Florida is a bird watcher’s paradise! From the soft sandy shores to the nearby wetlands, particularly in Bonita Springs, visitors may spot species like pelicans, snowy egrets, great blue herons, roseate spoonbills, and laughing gulls. The Gulf Coast is full of feathered surprises year-round.
Florida’s famous “sea cows” can often be spotted in warm coastal inlets, canals, and bay waters, especially during the cooler winter months. These gentle giants may be seen slowly gliding through the water while kayaking, boating, or exploring local nature preserves. An encounter with a manatee is a memorable travel experience you’ll have forever!
Dolphin sightings in the area are an iconic part of the Southwest Florida experience. You’re likely to spot dolphins during the early morning or sunset hours along the Gulf and nearby bays. They may be seen diving in and out of the calm waters, or if you’re on a boat, you may be able to look down and watch them swimming right below the surface. Bottlenose dolphins travel in pods and are very social creatures.
Whether you’re casting a line off the beach or exploring inland lakes and rivers, Southwest Florida is teeming with incredible fish species. You might catch snook, redfish, sea trout, tarpon, or pompano in the saltwater shallows along the Gulf and in the mangroves. Common freshwater species include largemouth bass, bluegill, and catfish, found in local lakes, canals, and the outer edges of the Everglades. Local bait shops and charters are always happy to help with gear, licenses, and the best secret spots!
Shelling is a beloved Southwest Florida tradition and one of the simplest ways to enjoy the beauty of the Gulf Coast. Thanks to gentle tides and calm waters, local beaches are known for colorful shells, sand dollars, and other coastal treasures that regularly wash ashore. Early mornings and low tide are often the best times to explore the shoreline, where every walk along the beach feels a little different from the last.
In the heart of Southwest Florida, the Everglades showcase a unique side of the region’s natural beauty. This vast subtropical wilderness is home to diverse wildlife, winding waterways, and unforgettable landscapes that feel untouched by time. Visitors to the area often choose to explore the Everglades by airboat or kayak. There are also many scenic boardwalk hikes in the area.
Southwest Florida’s freshwater ecosystems are home to some fascinating species of reptiles, including the American alligator. While alligators may be found near lakes, rivers, marshes, canals, and wetlands, they generally avoid human interaction when left undisturbed. Visitors are encouraged to observe wildlife from a respectful distance and never feed native animals.
The Florida Gulf Coast is a fantastic year-round destination, but we recommend visiting Southwest Florida between November and May. Temperatures are milder, humidity is lower, and the area is especially vibrant during this peak season.
Southwest Florida maintains an average annual temperature of a balmy 75°F, with summer highs reaching up to 90°F and winter lows dipping to 55°F. Be advised that Florida weather can change quickly, so it’s always a good idea to check the forecast before planning your day.
The tides play a significant role in beach life here in Southwest Florida. We typically experience two high tides and two low tides each day. Low tide is ideal for shelling, while high tide is better for paddleboarding and body surfing.
During the peak tourist season from late Fall to early Spring, Southwest Florida welcomes many seasonal visitors and “snowbirds,” which can lead to heavier traffic on main roads, near beaches, and at popular dining spots. We recommend planning outings outside rush hour (7:30 AM – 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM) or allowing extra time.
Red Tide is a naturally occurring algae that can affect the Southwest Florida coastline. During a bloom, the algae release airborne toxins that may cause coughing, sneezing, throat irritation, or a tickling sensation in the chest. Check here for Florida Red Tide Updates, as the algae is not always visible. If you start experiencing symptoms or notice dead fish in the area, it’s best to avoid going in the water.
Hurricane season in Southwest Florida runs from June 1 through November 30, with peak activity between August and October. While serious storms are relatively rare, it’s always good to be aware and prepared. You can track storms and forecasts here: National Hurricane Center – NOAA
The Gulf Coast is absolutely stunning year-round, but we recommend planning a visit between November and May. January through April offer the most pleasant weather and lower humidity, while the shoulder-season months (November, December, and May) have similarly great weather, often with fewer crowds.
We recommend renting a car during your trip. While everything is relatively close and accessible, a car makes getting to and from the airport, as well as your favorite restaurants and shopping districts, more convenient. Renting a car also makes it easier to explore more of the area across Naples, Bonita Springs, and Fort Myers.
Pack light and breathable clothing for the day and a light jacket for the evening. While you should be safe with a “resort casual” style for the majority of your stay, some upscale restaurants may require collared shirts for men. Of course, don’t forget your swimsuit, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen. When you plan a stay with CLC Vacation Homes, you can pack light, as most everyday essentials are provided for you!
